Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads.
And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tinny reindeer.

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name!

"Now Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! On, Cupid! on, on Donner and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!"

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky.
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of Toys, and St Nicholas too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St Nicholas came with a bound.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot.
A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler, just opening his pack.

His eyes-how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow.

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath.
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly!

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself!
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk.
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose!

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight,
"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!"

SHADOW SHOT SUNDAY...The View From The Couch

This may well be my most pathetic excuse for a shadow shot yet. But humor me...won't you? I've been sick...and I'm a little doped up. This is shadow shot #29 for me. Try as I might...I just can't seen to catch up with Tracy. I don't want to fall further behind. Sigh.

Well, guess I'd better drink your health...cheers! For more appealing shadows shots check out Hey Harriet!

Yesterday on Shadow Shot Sunday Nihal of Crossroads brought up an interesting topic...real v.s. fake Christmas trees. Which is better for the environment?

For regular readers of my blog, you know concern for the environment is at the heart of my business. As much as I love old things for their own sake...I also love the fact that vintage aficionados around the world are helping to preserve our environment by recycling, restyling, re-purposing and recreating elements of our past...thereby keeping untold tons of would-be trash out of landfills. For many of us lovers of vintage our efforts do not end at fashion or home is a pervasive lifestyle. We recycle everything from household trash to packing materials, buy locally and organically, walk, bike or use public transportation when ever possible. It is in the forefront of our minds. We are an eco-conscious lot, us lovers of all things old.

So when Nihal mentioned her plans for purchasing a retro style artificial tree...well it seemed like a good opportunity to offer up a little food for thought.

I found an interesting clip, addressing this topic, from Miles Grant of The Green Miles.Net...

I also found a lot of great information in this article by Kimberly Crandell on Scientific Blogging.

When it comes to the environment it is not always a one size fits all solution. There can often be many factors to consider. For example when we lived in Colorado we always bought "bagged and balled" trees. We had lots of property to plant them on and there were not as many nearby Christmas tree farms. We had great success in that climate with the trees surviving a winter transplant. Now that we live in Michigan tree farms are much more prevalent and we no longer have anywhere to plant live trees.

For artificial trees I recommend vintage aluminum. These trees can be recycled should they ever become damaged beyond repair, with the least environmental impact. And of course it is better to continue using any vintage artificial tree rather then packing it off to the landfill. However, I hope anyone considering buying a new artificial tree will take all factors into consideration before making that purchase.

I hope this gives some good food for thought to anyone struggling with this decision. Thanks to Nihal for opening up the issue. The first step is always to thoughtfully consider the issue and try to make the most environmentally sound decision for your unique situation.

We went and picked out our Christmas tree today. Oh, how I love the smell of fresh pine! We spent the evening decorating it...remembering with each ornament the stories of Christmases past. So, it's no surprise that's where I found my Shadow Shot tonight. Lurking right there on the wall...the soft feathering of pine needles.

This little guy is one of my favorite vintage ornaments. I fall in love with him all over again every Christmas.

Yesterday morning I went to part 2 of the huge estate sale I first posted on here...and again here. I found some fun things...but nothing quite fun enough to completely overcome my disappointment. This time they didn't open the big building. The mannequins and dress forms I had been drooling thru the window at weren't for sale! Can I hear a big Waaah! Those beauties were what I really wanted...what I'd been waiting for...coveting...since October! Everything else paled by comparison. How could they leave those girls in that cold, dusty, lonely, old building...and at Christmastime even...when there are so many of us out here just salivating at the chance to give them a proper home!? Big Sigh...oh well....I did manage to find a few other cool things....

These shoe covers are really cool! They are so cute and look like they were never worn.

Love this round American Tourister luggage.

The inside is in great shape...

Best of all...when I looked in the little pocket in the back...along with a couple of bobby pins...I found this....

...and inside that cute little envelope....Aaaa (cue the singing angels)...

I almost never find keys with vintage luggage! How adorable is that little bell hop shape!?! to clean up all the orphaned treasures and start searching for their new homes...maybe in time for Christmas...or New Years?!

15 days til Christmas?! I hope everyone is all ready and sitting back enjoying the festiveness...that's how it should be!!

I myself am about to hit panic mode...but...that's another story. For now, I have something cool to show you...

Recently, Anita bought one of the display chests I found at this estate sale....

Thanks to Anita's talents...she now looks like this...

How fun is that!! She has new life and a new name. Anita has dubbed her fabo redo Vera! Great job Anita...Vera looks stunning!!

It seems I've just gotten a handle on everything I bought at that very same estate sale (I can't believe it was all the way back in October?!)...and now in the middle of all the holiday's already time for round two! For those of you just tuning in...there is so much stuff in this huge building and adjoining apartment and associated basements...they are having a three part sale! Of course I've been peeking thru what windows I can...and I see mannequins and dress forms, oh my! Sooooo, guess where I'll be tomorrow morning?! That's right...freezing my toukus off in search of more vintage treasure!!!

On an unrelated note, last night when perhaps I should have been decorating my tree?! I made a couple more of the Arctic Circle Hats...

If you're in need of stylish head know where to find it!

As to the requests for me to build a snowman out of the bounty of snow we've been receiving...I think that may have to wait til January;D
