SHADOW SHOT SUNDAY

...for no man lives in the external truth among salts and acids, but in the warm, phantasmagoric chamber of his brain, with the painted windows...

HEIRLOOM TREASURES

I found these at an estate sale recently. A little bag, hanging in among the purses, filled with balls of some sort of crochet work. It wasn't until after I got home, gave them a good soak and started ironing them...that I realised what they were...a lovely handmade coaster set...with their own beautiful storage bag! I thought they were just so great I had to share them with everyone.

Can you imagine how many hours someone worked on those! If they don't deserve to be a treasured heirloom...I don't know what does!! It is so very tempting to keep these. I have to keep telling myself..."I can't keep it all". They would be so perfect on an elegantly set dinner table...I'm thinking Christmas...with all the good silver and china. I've listed these in my Etsy Vintage Shop. But I've got to say, I'm really thinking if they don't sell before Christmas...well, guess whose table they'll be gracing?!

I hope everyone here in the states has a wonderful Thanksgiving!!

BOOK TAG and SHADOW SHOT SUNDAY

Earlier this week Pat tagged me to "Share seven random and/or weird book facts about yourself". Never being quite sure what constitutes random or weird...this is what I came up with...

1.) I have a book fetish.

Oh...there's more...but I think you get the idea. I love books for books sake. I love them for the very idea that someone took the time to sit down and write them. I love them because everything there is to know is contained within their covers (this sounds more meaningful if you are older than the Internet).

2.) I'm often asked if I've read all my books. My answer...no. Oh, I've read loads of them. But, when I started collecting them I was still at an age where I was deluded enough to think I would have plenty of time to read them all. I must have thought that I would somehow be independently wealthy and have hours on end to sit and read. Silly child!

3.) Those books up there...they came with the house. I feel obligated to make sure all books have a proper home...I could not even think of kicking them out of their house.

4.) This was one of my first books.

I think I memorized every poem in this little book and recited them ad nauseum. They're still in there...rattling around my brain...with a lot of other useless information. No wonder I can't remember where I put things...my brain is full of silly childhood poetry.

Now, where was I...oh yes 5.) I loved books so much as a child that I was befriended by our grade school librarian. Mrs. Guiette would come and get me out of class to help her re-shelve books in the little basement library. This was my favorite book at that age...

...it had been loved to death by myself and the other children. When it was time to be discarded...Mrs. Guiette gave it to me.

I have a thing for pigs too...but that's another story.

6.) One of my favorite books of my 20's was this one...

...how I wanted to be Osa!

7.) In an effort to force my love of books on the next generation...I bought my niece and nephew book kits for Christmas one year. I never got a copy of my nephews...but here's my nieces.

I'm thinking my efforts may have been successful, at least where my niece is concern. She's already "borrowed" a stack off the shelf...at least a year ago...and they've not returned! I hope they've become the beginning of her own book fetish!!

The rules of this tag are:

1. Link to the person who tagged you and post the rules on your blog.
2. Share seven random and/or weird book facts about yourself.
3. Tag seven random people at the end of your post, and include links to their blogs.
4. Let each person know that they've been tagged by leaving a comment on their blog.

Anyone who wants to play along...consider yourself tagged. Let me know and I'll link to your post.

While getting photos for this tag I found a couple of old Emily Post books I didn't even remember I had. I brought them down to have a better look at and snapped this Shadow Shot.

Hope everyone has an enjoyable weekend! To have a look at all the other Shadow Shots...swing by Hey Harriet's and follow the links.

NOT SO BREAKING NEWS...

I've been hid away in my little hole here for days...listing, listing, listing...and packing, packing, packing...having trouble thinking of anything else. Little did I know, that on Sunday evening (Australian time),Brisbane was hammered by a hellacious storm...a cyclone apparently...worst in 25 years...500 homes hit...40 thousand without power!

No one can make the word cr*p sound so lovely as an Aussie girl.

Thoughts and prayers out to the residents of Brisbane and doubly so to our own BrisStyle friends! I hope you and yours are all dry, safe, sound and powered up!

In less pressing news an unnamed blogger has a zit the size of a mountain on her nose...sorry no video footage.

No post would be complete without a bit of eye candy. I did manage to get out of my cave for a bit last weekend to go to a craft show with my Mum. Of course as luck would have it we stumbled across an unexpected estate sale. Some of the finds have already been listed, sold and shipped off...a stool is winging its way to Japan as I type. A couple of the larger things are still lodged in the back of my Blazer...more on that later. At our true destination I found this....

How cute is that?! In the second photo I think my bag looks like a frog face! Love it!! I gave the nice woman who made it a big pitch on Etsy...she'd never heard of it...I think she'd do very well there!

Okay...back to work for me...I've lots of packing and shipping to get done this morning! Hurray!!

SHADOW SHOT SUNDAY...abstraction distraction

It's been a gloomy November here in the far north...well...not that far north...but far enough. Not a lot of shadows to be seen. As I went to get my camera to go hunting...I spied this...

I think it is the most abstract shadow shot I've ever contributed. Any guesses as to what it is?

For more fun in the shadows stop by Hey Harriet's and follow the links.

P.S.

Ok...when Sharon guessed the "Shroud of Terin"...that one was too funny! It is the oddest shadow. I have to show you what it is. If you want to have your own guess...you'll have to try to blindly scroll down to the comments and not look at the next photo.

It is the shadow this door is throwing out on the carpet in the dark hall. I took the other photo standing out in the hall of just the floor. I don't really understand why it has such round spots on the shadow...there is nothing round about the door. Go figure?!

IT'S BEGINNING TO LOOK A LOT LIKE CHRISTMAS?

Well, not really...and it feels premature to be thinking of it already…but that’s exactly what I’ve been doing. It's never too early to start finding new homes for all the orphaned vintage Christmas things in time for their big holiday. Here are some of the treasures I’ve been listing…

These are a very cool "String 'O Lights"...1940's-50's is my favorite era for vintage Christmas!

I adore vintage bulbs and my own tree overfloweth! These are "Shiny Brite","Made in the U.S.A." and "West Germany".

Displays of "Japan" putz houses make the cutest little holiday vignettes.

The graphics on this box of lights are just beautiful?!

I've also cleaned and repaired the vintage robe I found at that last estate sale...

...and I couldn't help thinking how much it reminds me of an old world Father Christmas robe...

Anyone dreaming of passing out presents Christmas morning dressed as an old fashioned Santa?! Sounds like fun!!

Hold the phone! It's Sunday...well, in Australia anyway...already ?! What a week...I don't know where the time went?! Quick find a shadow...

I love the old vintage rotary phones...especially this cool turquoise one! Check out all the other cool Shadow Shots here.

In the midst of my oh so busy and joyous week...I received a nice little surprise in the mail...

...compliments of Kim @ Kim's Treasures! Kim had an identify the obscure plant contest...and I won! Thanks Kim!! I've already eaten most of the M&Ms...and I can't wait to hang the cute little ornament on my Christmas tree!

Hope everyone is having a joyous weekend!

MY FELLOW COUNTRYMEN...Have You Voted?

I like the noise of democracy.
James Buchanan

...So long as the people do not care to exercise their freedom, those who wish to tyrannize will do so; for tyrants are active and ardent, and will devote themselves in the name of any number of gods, religious and otherwise, to put shackles upon sleeping men.
Voltaire

For too long we've been told about "us" and "them." Each and every election we see a new slate of arguments and ads telling us that "they" are the problem, not "us." But there can be no "them" in America. There's only us.
Bill Clinton

I could think of no worse example for nations abroad, who for the first time were trying to put free electoral procedures into effect, than that of the United States wrangling over the results of our presidential election, and even suggesting that the presidency itself could be stolen by thievery at the ballot box.
Thomas Jefferson

It's not the hand that signs the laws that holds the destiny of America. It's the hand that casts the ballot.
Harry S. Truman

If you have not already done so...please exercise your right to vote today!!

SHADOW SHOT SUNDAY...Autumn Leaves

"Come said the wind to
the leaves one day,
Come o're the meadows
and we will play.
Put on your dresses
scarlet and gold,
For summer is gone
and the days grow cold."
- A Children's Song of the 1880's

"The winds will blow their own freshness into you,
and the storms their energy,
while cares will drop away from you
like the leaves of Autumn."
- John Muir
