SHADOW OBSESSION

As I think most of us shadow shooter have come to realize...once you start shadow hunting...it's hard to stop! I've almost as many shadow shots from our trip to DC as I have shots of crowds...and that's a lot! Here's one I like...

What I like best about it...is that you can't really tell it's winter. It could almost be spring in that photo. I'm just going to pretend it is...

...oh, while I'm off daydreaming about spring...have a look at what the other shadow hunters have found. Click on over to Hey Harriet's.

Happy Shadow Hunting!

I'm actually going to try to follow the rules this time...as I've only just recently met Peggy and I don't want to let her know, just yet, what a putz I am about following rules. Hummm...probably just spilled the beans. Well, I think it's only right...in the spirit of the award, that I at least try to improve my rule following attitude...so here goes...I would like to present this award to...

On Monday I offered up some Inaugural souvenirs. This afternoon I put the names of those desiring one into the Randomizer and it spit out 4 lucky winners. Debbie, Tracy, Pat and Eki...if you 4 would email me your mailing addresses, I will get those buttons on their way. I'm so sorry to those that came out on the bottom of the randomized list. I wish I'd thought to get more of them:(

LAMPSHADES:

Well, really there is just one lampshade. But it is some lampshade...and it belongs to some lamp!

This morning my mother, sister-in-law and I set out for a "rare in these parts" winter rummage sale. It was a bust. So in quest of fulfilling our junking joneses we went to a couple of local consignment shops.

One of our stops was to GARAGE SALE 360. I planned on a link to their FaceBook page here...until I got to Facebook and could find nothing more than a photo of the owner. I'm registered on FaceBook...but have never really used it. I only joined to keep tabs on my teenaged niece:0 When I got there...on Facebook...I realized I have no clue how the site works and what there even is to see there. Anyway, if you're ever in Fenton Michigan, Garage Sale 360 is located at 1011 W. Silver Lake Rd. Do stop in. You never know what fun things you'll find there. What we found was spectacular! It is the most fabulous 1940's-50's lamp. I know from previous experience, this will not be up many of my readers alley...but I LOVE it!!

To me...it is totally iconic! Did I say I thought it was fabulous?!

This is what makes it even more fabulous...

...does it not make the most stunning hat!! What a good sport my sister-in-law is to model it:D Look out Royal Ascot here I come!

HODGEPODGE OF HAPPINESS

I don't know why I gave this post that title. Well, it is going to be about a variety of things, all of which have been making me happy. But as soon as I typed it in...my mind immediately went to "may the bluebird of happiness fly up your nose". Funny how minds work...or at least my mind.

Have you ever heard of the bluebird of happiness flying up your nose before? My dad used to always say that...and I never really knew why. Once I'd thought about it...I couldn't stop. Isn't that odd...in the decades I'd been hearing him say that I never questioned why till now? I had to go see if I could find out where that came from...other than my dad.

This is what I found...it was a song?! Did you know that? It was sung by "little" Jimmy Dickens. Peaked on the Billboard charts at #1 in 1965...or so my sources say. Here's the lyrics:

One fine day as I was a-walkin' down the street
Spied a beggar man with rags upon his feet
Took a penny from my pocket
In his tin cup I did drop it
I heard him say as I made my retreat

CHORUS
"May the bird of paradise fly up your nose"
"May an elephant caress you with his toes"
"May your wife be plagued with runners in her hose"
"May the bird of paradise fly up your nose"

The laundry man is really on his toes
Found a hundred-dollar bill among my clothes
When he called me I came a-runnin'
Gave him back his dime for phonin'
I heard him sayin' as I turned to go

CHORUS

I was way behind one day to catch the train
Taxi driver said "We'll make it just the same"
The speed cop made it with us
And as he wrote out the ticket
I stood by politely a-waitin' for my change

CHORUS

Now I'm wondering what the tune that went with it sounded like? I couldn't find it on "playlist.com"...or I'd have it playing right now:) I did find an equally silly song by Jimmy Dickens that I loaded on there...about cold taters?! Those are silly songs...and have absolutely nothing with what I was going to write about!

If you're still with me I'll move along...

When we got home from DC last week, this was in my mailbox...

I won another necklace from Two Dog Pond!! Rachel's necklaces are so fun loving and her "caption contest" is just a hoot! If you haven't played yet you should give it a try...go ahead...join in the silliness:-) You too could win a necklace...or two!

Second on my list of hodgepodge happiness is another treasury! Yay!! This totally atomic one...

...was created by Susan of Susan's FORDYCE MILL ANTIQUES. She has a cute little shop there with lots of vintage goodness...might want to check it out?! Thanks so much Susan for including me!!

Next up on my parade or happiness is this...

Now that's some prime treasure hunting territory...and that's just the basement. The local Lyon's club here in my Village...the only surviving "business" in town...has starting having a "flea market" on Sundays to augment their Saturday night Bingo.

I was too embarrassed to have them seeing me taking a photo of the upstairs. The men running it wonder what anybody would want with all that crap to start with...let alone why anyone would want a picture of it! Maybe I'll get up my nerve next Sunday. I'm pretty much their biggest/only customer. It's been going on for a month or so and they are starting to point out choice digging areas..."there's a box full of old glass juicers down there somewhere...try that pile at the bottom of the stairs". Thanks guys...don't mind if I do.

Anyone have any use for a 1972 TV Guide? It's in very good condition?!

How 'bout a little something for the dog lovers...

Anywho, what I found there this week added to my happiness. A much smaller haul than I've brought home from previous visits there...but I was pleased.

I love this picture! It's a three D kind of effect...all dimensional. It's marked and dated...looks like 1941. Unfortunately the markings are mostly below the frame level. I'll have to take it apart to read it. I can't believe how perfect it is. It just has one little nick to the surface of the print. Very unique...I haven't seen a raised one like that.

I got a whole box of these dishes. I've seen the pattern before...but don't know the name. It's from Homer Laughlin...Rhythm line. If anyone knows the pattern name...shout it out!

I adore this fabric! I am so sick of the cold this winter...those little crocuses are just calling out to me. I can't wait to see my real ones popping up thru the snow!

Well I think I'm all happied out. How 'bout you? Any thing making you feel especially happy these days?

MY INAUGURAL EXPERIENCE

I've written and re-written this post...wanting it to somehow
be as special as the moment in time it is intended to reflect.
I regrettably do not possess those kinds of writing or photography skills.

Whether you were in DC for the Inauguration of our 44th President or
you watched it at home on TV...I think we all felt the gravity of the moment.

The photos of my inaugural experience are humble. There are no photos
of celebrities, grand Balls or front row views. They are just photos of people. People with a common sense of purpose anxious to see a page of history turn before their very eyes.

Since none of my photos in and of themselves are particularly special
I have grouped them all together in 4 little videos...one for each day
of the Inaugural celebration. This is the first time I have tried to make one of these little montages. After a few false starts...I think they've come out okay. Anyway, I hope you like them.

Kevin and I had a great time and we met a lot of very nice people in those crowds. I'd like to thank each and every one of them for sharing such a special experience with us. May our hopes and dreams for peace and prosperity come true.
Lead the way President Obama...we're all behind you!

Happy Treasure Hunting!

P.S. Oh! I almost forgot. I brought home 4 commemorative pins. I'd love to send you one if you would like. Leave a comment here letting me know you'd like to have one and tell me how you celebrated the inauguration. If there are more than 4 of you who would like one...I'll put your names in the randomizer to determine 4 recipients.

Memorial Shadow

Kev & I returned from our inaugural whirlwind trip to DC on Thursday. What an experience! I'll put a post up with some photos on Monday along with a little inaugural giveaway. Stop back by if you're interested.

While we were in DC we made a tour of all the monuments. I caught this shadow of myself on one of the columns of the Jefferson Memorial.

See what the other Shadow Shooters have in store for you at Hey Harriet's.

Thanks to all who stopped by to wish us a good trip. I'll be getting around to visit you all in the next couple of days.

I would also like to thank Mary Morra

and SewnNatural

for including items from my shop in their lovely Treasuries. Thanks ladies...your collections are beautiful!

SSS & "I do solemnly swear...."

...that I am absolutely freezing!

It is currently -1F where I am right now. That's just wrong. I enjoy winter. I don't usually complain about it...really...but this is ridiculous. To add to it, the power in our entire village went out at 5am (no power=no heat) leaving it quite frigid...even in the house...under all my warm blankets. Nice way to wake up in the morning!

It will feel positively balmy in Washington DC on Tuesday with an expected temperature of 30F...ahhh that will feel good...warmth.

Believe it or not I am still working on my travel arrangements. This small town girl is beginning to feel a bit like she is making a pilgrimage to mecca. Cars and buses and trains and hiking...slowly but surely it's all coming together...and just in the nick of time. Obama-rama...as Cecile calls it...here we come!

Since this will be my last post till I return from the inauguration, I want to leave you with my shot for Hey Harriet's Shadow Shot Sunday.

Before I made my pilgrimage I thought it would be a good idea to get a massage...well it's always a good time to get a massage. Anyway, I found this lurking on the massage room wall.

See you all when I get back!

First I'd like to thank the lovely T. Allen-Mercado of Tea and Honey Bread for this opportunity! So lovely of you to host such a fun gathering!

This is audition week. That's right. In honor of the upcoming season of American Idol, T. is giving us a shot at fame and fortune. An audition...and chance to go to Hollywood!

First, we needed to do a little shopping. Gotta look like the STARS we are! Being a vintage girl...you know the look I'm going for!

From LuciteBox...what's $240 for my moment in the spotlight?!

From Lisa's RetroStyle...wait...those are mine. I'll just borrow those from my inventory.

From The Crumpet Closet ...nothing says star like Silver Stilettos!

Now move over baby...it's my turn on that stage!! Come on girls...back me up...

That was fun T.!!

Come on everyone...what are you waiting for...get yourself together and go grab your moment in the spotlight!

Thanks to you Mr. Gordy...and all your Motown artists...I sure have enjoyed all the great music you've brought to us!!

ANOTHER SUNDAY IN AUSTRALIA = SSS

Last weekend Gillis and I walked out across a frozen farm field to a little grove of woods that we like to visit from time to time. It was a spectacular day. Beautiful sun. Not like today...

I of course forgot my camera. We did however bring home a little remembrance that I noticed laying on the end table bathed in sunlight yesterday.

I love milk pods. I couldn't believe this one had managed to hang on to his seeds thru all the nasty weather we've been having. But he did. And I was so happy to find him. A nice reminder of warmer days.

On a side note...this arrived in the mail yesterday.

Just a general invitation. Not an invite to one of the balls or even to sit in the bleachers. Just your basic invite to come and stand with the "huddled masses yearning to breath free". As if I needed one. Oh, I'll be there. I wouldn't miss it for anything. Though it is nice to be invited. Anyone else planning on being among the throngs of millions?

Let me just say...I request the honor of your presence to attend and participate in Shadow Shot Sunday!

TREASURY MADNESS

For those of you interested in knowing how to get an Etsy Treasury, or any web page for that matter, into the body of your blog post read on.

This is called a screen shot.

Although there are multiple ways of doing this...the following is what I found to be the simplest. I will try to cover methods for both my laptop (os windows XP) and my PC (os Vista) which have different keyboard configurations and different versions of Internet Explorer (IE 6.0 on laptop and IE 7.0 on PC) browsers. If you have a different browser you should be able to google "how do I get a screen shot on...." and find lots of much better turorials. (You can click on any picture to enlarge.)

1.) Open the Treasury or web page that you wish to "copy".

2.) On IE 6.0 go to "view" on your tool bar left click for the drop down and select "full screen".

For IE 7.0 to make the picture fit on my screen I did the following....go to the tool bar...and left click on "Page" for the drop down and go to "zoom" select "zoom out"...or was it "zoom in"...you'll have to fool with it...you need to make it smaller (what you are doing is changing the screen resolution so more of the page appears at one time...if you all ready know another way to do that...by all means do what you know). Next go back to the tool bar and click "tools" for the drop down and go to "full screen". You may have to go back and forth zooming in and out until you have the largest version where you can see everything you are trying to get on the "full screen" mode.

3.) Now position the page so that you have everything you want to "copy" visible on your screen.(The "picture" you are about to get will be all/only what you can see on your screen at the moment.)

4.)Next on my laptop I press and hold "FN" (function key) then "prt sc" key(print screen).

On the PC I just press "prt scrn". Your computer has now captured what you are viewing on the screen.

5.) Neither of my photo programs will allow me to save this directly into my photo files. So what I did was open "paint". Left click "edit" select "paste" and your Treasury/screen shot should appear. If you have at least every thing you intended to get...Select "file" then "save as". For "Save as type" select "JPEG". If you did not get what you intended you will have to have another go at getting everything you want properly visible on the screen.

6.)Now you will be able to open this file (you will find it stored with all your photo files) in whatever photo editing program you have and you will be able to edit and post it as you do any other photo.

I do believe this was my first attempt at any type of tutorial. Funny considering how computer illiterate I am! I had no clue what the little "prt sc" was even on my keyboard for.

I hope my instructions make sense and that someone finds it useful. If anyone gives it a shot please let me know how it worked for you. If you need clarification...please feel free to ask.

I hope everyone has an awesome weekend! Hope to see you in the shadows on Sunday!

Grrr...

When I started off this morning I was so excited! I got an email telling me that one of my items made it into an Etsy treasury by Claire! Her first treasury...my first treasury! Perfectly wonderful! I really was so thrilled!

That was 6 hours ago. I've spent more time than I care to admit trying to get a copy of her treasury for this post. Every time I thought "give it up...you have more pressing things you need to get done", I couldn't help thinking...well maybe if I just try this.

Do any of you have times like that? When your desires far exceed your skills...but you just can't seem to let it go. You feel compelled to just keep on trying?

I wanted it to look just like this or this would be great. I tried cutting and pasting the original, creating a mini, getting the code trying it every which way I could think of...nothing. Well, except a headache and the oppressive feeling of defeat.

I emailed Charmaine...because she always does such pretty ones. Charmaine works her magic on a Mac...I'm PC. So her technique is apparently not doable by me. However, she was kind enough to make one for me...bless you Charmaine! One would think that would have solved the problem...but nooooo. I couldn't get her attachment to save to my pictures!

Then, as if by magic, whilst I was making my 100th attempt to somehow get this task done. There it was...just somehow showing up in my photo files...Charmaine's copy of the treasury!

So without further ado...I present...thanks to Claire and Charmaine....

FROST SOPHISTICATE....icy elegance

Isn't it pretty. That's mine down there in the lower right hand corner...the little mirror. Thanks Claire. Thanks Charmaine.

Now, this should be the end of this drama shouldn't it?! And yet I just can't get it out of my head until I figure out how to do it for myself! Does that make me stubborn and compulsive or just persistent? Persistence is a good thing...right?

So I beg you...if there is anyone out there who knows how to get these treasuries into a blog post using a PC...please, please share your vast knowledge with the class! I would really like to not be thinking about this anymore.

Happy Treasure Hunting,

...it's one for the money. Two for the show.

I was just minding my own business. Working on my listings. When I set these up to be photographed. I would soooo keep these if my feet were smaller. It doesn't get better than vintage blue suede bowling shoes. Classic.

It only took a second and I had Elvis on the brain. I could use a little midday Retro Hottie break. How 'bout you?

Gotta love a little Elvis in the afternoon!

Three to get ready. Now go cat go! Hope you all have a rocking good song in your head today!

WALKING ON SUNSHINE...Shadow Shot Sunday

You know what I love best about shadows?

I love it that they grow in the light. Of course the best light for growing shadows is SUNLIGHT!

Sunlight can be a rare commodity in the northern regions in winter...so a sunny winter day in Michigan is a reason for rejoicing! Gillis and I rejoiced today with a walk in the beautiful warmth of the sunshine.

On our way thru downtown we saw the sun conspiring with this tree to throw a spectacular shadow on the side of this building.

We stopped by to visit the playground and found the slide and climbing dome playing games with the sun too.

All is well in my world when the sun is shining!! Happy SUNday everyone! I hope wherever you are that the sun is shining on you as well! Stop by Hey Harriet's for more shadow play!

UNRESOLVED and RESOLVED

I'm not saying that I've made a resolution. I haven't. I don't make resolutions anymore. Every time I've made a resolution I promptly set about breaking it. So what I did was I went for a walk this morning. I may go for another one tomorrow morning. Probably won't walk on Sunday...but maybe again on Monday. Maybe. Just me. No husband. No dog. Just me. Thinking. Taking in the fresh air. Seeing. This is what I saw this morning...

Aaahh...the heavens opened and the sun shone thru. Just for me. Thank you sun. Thank you sky. Thank you heavens.

My grandmother on the other hand was a much more resolved woman. Two days before Christmas...on a Tuesday morning...my maternal grandmother died. She was 97. It was a blessedly short episode of pneumonia that finally got her. The evening before she died she said "I'm going home"...and that's exactly what she did. This was her at 16 with her brother Floyd.

Thanks for all the warm memories Grandma. Thanks for the love. I'm glad you made it safely home.

Happy Treasure Hunting!
