HANDMADE WITH A HISTORY

I have a special fondness for old handmade things. I even have a section in Lisa's RetroStyle Vintage Craft & Supply devoted to vintage handmade items (meaning things that were made by hand at least 20 years ago). It's interesting to me to think that, over time, all of the handmade items being sold on Etsy today will fall into this category. Even my own handcrafted hats and bags.

For reasons I find difficult to understand our industrialized society has often valued mass produced over handmade. I'm sure a whole book could be (or maybe has been) written on the psychology behind this phenomenon. However, with the growing popularity of Etsy, handmade seems to be experiencing a bit of a renaissance. I certainly hope it continues.

To my way of thinking nothing is more valuable than something someone took the time to make by hand. The very nature of making things by hand means that it is one of a kind. No two will be exactly the same and that fact makes it extra special to me.

I have an extra extra special fondness for old things that were made by people I've known. I get all warm and fuzzy thinking of friends and family, "back in the day", putting their hand to a creative endeavor. Take this coat for example.

My grandmother made this coat for me by hand when I just a little girl. The detail and quality of the work is just amazing. The love that goes into something handmade...it really is just priceless.

I am so thankful to my mother for keeping this coat for all these years. I obviously view it as a work of art.

When my grandmother went into a nursing home a number of years back. I put the coat in the shadow box, with a photo of her in younger days...

...and this tag.

It hung in her room at the nursing home serving as a reminder to herself and others of the talented woman she was. Since her passing this winter it has come back to me and hangs in our dinning room with other family photos and treasures.

Does handmade with a history make you feel warm and fuzzy? Do you have a special way of displaying and enjoying your vintage handmade treasures? I'd love to hear about them.

COMIC RELIEF...

“Humor is the great thing, the saving thing. The minute it crops up, all our irritation and resentments slip away, and a sunny spirit takes their place.” ~ Mark Twain

Do you ever find you've lost your sense of humor just when you needed it most?

Boy, I certainly have!

I recently changed my blog address to a new domain name lisasretrostyle.com. Seemed like an easy enough thing to do. I wanted the new name so it would be easier for customers to remember and to put on little fabric labels to use in my upcycled vintage bags and hats. I love my little labels...

What ensued were hours of head banging vexation. First I noticed my blogroll had disappeared. Ok...well, I can fix that. Then I noticed my page rank had also disappeared. The page rank had turned into a big fat zero?! How could that happen? I worked so hard to get it and I haven't a clue how to get it back! Panic...anger...irritation! No humor to be found. I became like a rat in a maze searching for a fix to the problem. After many frustrating hours I dumbly stumbled on the simplest of solutions.

Although, I wished I had been able to find my sense of humor in the midst of the situation...better late than never. It occurred to me how often I feel like Lou Costello in "Who's on First" when navigating the confusing computing underworld.

Here's a little comic relief for anyone else who might be in need...

May you always be able to find your sense of humor!

cue the crocuses...SPRING HAS SPRUNG!!!

It's here! It's here! It's finally here!! The robins have returned, flowers have popped thru the once frozen ground, the earth has tilted on its axis and SPRING HAS SPRUNG!!

I am so excited to welcome Spring this year, I baked her (spring is most assuredly a her) some cupcakes!

And made a banner to honor her arrival...

I even crafted some bright and cheery new Spring hats to wear for the occasion!!

These cute bonnets will be in my other little Etsy shop, til they make their way to the spring Allegan show (April 26th).

Are you doing anything special to honor this first day of spring?

HAPPY SPRING NORTHERN HEMISPHERE!!

IT'S ALMOST SPRING...and I'm in Love...

...with a dress! So beautiful. Who wouldn't love it? I've been having fantasies about this dress. If it fit me...I could never let it go. It is 1950's confectionery bliss...

You know how it is when you're in love. You just have to let the whole world know. Shout it from the mountain top. I'M IN LOVE WITH THIS DRESS! That's how I feel. Just giddy.

I'll be visiting it everyday...here in my little vintage shop...until someone comes and steals it away. Have you every been in love with a dress?

Top O' the Morning!

Happy Saint Paddy's day everyone!!

****P.S. I just moved my blog address to my domain name. In the process I seem to have lost my page rank (which I'm told is temporary) and my blogroll (which I can't find any information on). I have no idea if the blogroll will return or not. Why am I telling you this? Well, if you were on my blogroll and have disappeared...I want you to know it was not intentional. I used my blogroll as my "reader" and didn't have blog address stored anywhere else. I am working on adding everyone back to the roll, but it may take me a bit to find and add you all again. Thanks for your understanding.

While I'm on the topic of blogger...has anyone out there used the blogger feature to "back-up" their blogs? I want/need to do this, but am terrified of losing everything. Anyone?

OH GOOD LORD...

...will you take a look out my window today!

Yea, that's more snow out there again. What fun is a Welcome Spring party in the snow? I can't believe there are only 8 days left of winter. Will someone please remind mother nature of that!

Oh well, looks like another nice day to stay inside with a book. And speaking of books, this came in the mail yesterday. I'm sure everybody gets these.

I join in periodically. Get my books and get out. If you work it right it comes out to be a pretty good deal. Here's a some of the pretty and useful books that are tempting me today.

Hummmm? Has anyone read any of these? Do you ever join book clubs?

WAIT FOR IT....

Who was it that said "anything worth having is worth waiting for"? Someone famous or was it my mother? Whoever it was I couldn't agree more.

I'm still waiting for spring. It's 40 degrees and raining here today. Still cold...but the rain is a good sign. The season of mud rebirth will soon be upon us. While many of you in the southern parts of this country are already watching bulbs bloom, I take heart in this little guy.

Just a little bud of hope on my lilac bush. But that's okay. I'm patient. Spring is worth waiting for. I've got my umbrella handy. Do you have yours?

I think this year I'll throw a big party for the first day of spring. A welcoming party. Mmmmm...that calls for cupcakes!

SHADOW SHOT SUNDAY

I'm photographically challenged. Whether in front of or behind the camera, my photos never come out quite as I had hoped.

On Wednesday, Hey Harriet shared some beautiful out takes from a book titled Masters of Photography. It was a wonderful post. I was particularly drawn to the simplicity of a 1928 photo by Andre Kertesz entitled The Fork.

Always an eager learner I thought I would see what I might be able to glean from attempting to emulate Mr. Kertesz's style.

The first thing I learned was that every fork in my drawer has stuff printed on the back of it. I found the markings to be distracting, so I opted for a spoon instead. Better to not outright copy anyway...I suppose.

I guess I'll call it The Spoon. Somehow I don't think the photographic masters have anything to fear from me.

For more...ahem...masterful shadow shots, swing by Hey Harriet's. Hope everyone is having a terrific weekend!

THE COUNTDOWN CONTINUES....

I'm obsessed with the coming of spring. Mmmmmm...longer, warmer days, sunshine, flowers popping, birds chirping. I just can't wait. I need a little fix to tide me over....

17 DAYS AND COUNTING...

Yes...I'm still counting down the days till spring. I've always liked winter but this one has been the longest and coldest I can remember. Although it looks very sunny at my little corner of the world...

...looks can be deceiving. It's a mere 12 degrees out there...burr. I am anxious to get outside and start working on some projects I have in mind for the upcoming Allegan season...but not in those temperatures. Instead I'll have to satisfy myself with a little indoor inspiration.

This is a great book. It's not a new one. It was published in 2005. But it's packed with so much antique and vintage goodness one could spend years garnering inspiration from its pages.

It's fun looking for ways to change up vintage treasure. Make it fresh and new again. Here are some fresh, fun and inspirational ideas from the book.

Who uses old mashers anymore?! Great idea to turn them into recipe card holders...how cute!

I'm not totally sure what you'd do with this little shelf...but I like it. Maybe to display a miniature salt & pepper shaker collection?

What a great way to re-purpose those old vintage lampshades! There are a lot of shades out there to be had and I can think of a number of different things that would make great bases.

Oh...I really adore this!! I think you'll be seeing some version of these in my booth at the shows this summer!! How cute it is this?!

And this idea is just plain fun!!

Thanks Sue and Ki for the inspiration! Bright and cheerful to warm the cockles of cold junkers soul!
