JUNK SISTAS UNITE ~ Bucks for Bella

When a Junk Sista calls...well, there's just one thing to do...answer!

Junk Sistas Amy ~ Trailer Trash and Theresa ~ Garden Antqs Vintage put out a call last weekend on behalf of the tiniest future Junk Sista ever! Her name is Bella. She is the granddaughter of Grand Dame of junking Debbie ~ Talking Trash.

Miss Bella has been fightin' her tiny hiney off ever since she set foot on this earth of ours and could use a little help. Bella was born premature at only 23 weeks gestation and weighed in at barely 1 pound. She has been hanging tough in the NICU at Baylor Hospital ever since. Well, as we all know medical care doesn't come cheap these days...hence the call from Amy and Theresa for a good Good Ol’Fashioned Fundraiser. The Junk Sistas have united to raise some Bucks for Bella.

The Sistas are having a month long raffle. Photos of items, details and tickets are available on the Junk Sistas blog. 100%
of proceeds raised are to go toward Bella's medical expenses.

From what I hear they have quite a heap O' treasure over there just waiting to be won. Have a look and see if you can't find a little something that you've been pining for and pony up for a chance to win. Could ya help a little sista out?

Here's what RetroStyle has contributed to the effort...

Ice Ice baby! Lovely blue vintage rhinestone set! Necklace measures aprox. 13 3/4 inches. Bracelet 6 1/4 inches. 1 1/2 inch drop earrings. Unsigned. In very good condition.

Hope everyone has a GRRReat weekend!! See ya in the shadows on Sunday:D

Happy Treasure Hunting!

ALLEGAN TALES ~ April Showers

I know there are a few of you out there who have been patiently waiting to hear the tales from Allegan. Now that I've had a couple days to dry out and rest up, let me just say we had an awesome time! Wet but awesome! Fortunately we got set up early Saturday before the rains came. But come they did and it rained and rained and then rained some more. It was one wet weekend.

RetroStyle's Humble Abode

The usual large Allegan crowds did not venture out on this wet weekend. Which meant that I had more time to visit with old friends and make some new ones as well.

This is my "neighbor" Bill. He is a sweetheart of a man. I feel lucky to have him in the tent next door. He sells antique furniture and does the most beautiful restoration work. I'm not sure Bill knows exactly what to make of his retro, colorful, kitschy, crafty neighbor, but he has always been very kind to me! It was good to see him again after the long winter.

I made a new friend in Mr. Don Baker. If I recall correctly Don has been in the antique business for 30 years. He gave me quite an education on tennis rackets and door knobs! He has a collection of over 2,000 tennis rackets!! And now my mother's vintage racket, the very one that I myself used in the 1970's, is a part of his amazing collection. Cool.

While standing outside my tent during a respite from the rain I turned around to see this familiar face.

This is Susan. I met Susan the previous weekend at my garage sale about 155 miles from where we currently stood. She had no idea I sold antiques/vintage and I had no idea she'd ever heard of Allegan, let alone would turn up at my booth this weekend! "Well fancy seeing you here!" Turns out Susan not only loves old things...but she's a blogger too! She authors the blog Pickled Grapes. Turns out we had a LOT to talk about. As Susan and I were talking about the wild and wonderful world of blogging, this lady was perusing cards in the booth.

This is Leigh Ann. Among other things, Leigh Ann does trunk shows for Matilda Jane. She joined in our conversation and I tell you, we three could have talked all day!

Kindred Spirits

So, those are the feel good stories of the weekend. Oh yeah, and between all my chatting...I actually sold some stuff!! WooHoo!!!

But, in the words of Longfellow "Into each life some rain must fall." So here's the rain on my parade. See this lady.

I don't know her name. This is the deal. During one of the major downpours of the day my hubby runs a sandwich into the tent for me and then goes back in our truck. It's a yummy, messy one that I promptly get all over myself. I set my sandwich down on the table and dash around the corner to grab a napkin from the truck. As I run out, that lady is making for the cover of my tent. I'm only gone for a second and when I come back in she is sticking her finger in my sandwich?! When I yell "NO", in a knee-jerk attempt to stop her...she just looks up at me and says "I thought it was fake". I swear I did not hear anything else come out of her mouth. I paused hoping for an "I'm sorry". Nothing. All I could say was "ah...that was my lunch". Still nothing. 10 long, quiet minutes pass. Finally, she picks up an umbrella I have for sale. It's $12. She wants to know if I'll take $8. I say "$10". She says "$9". I have got to be kidding. You come in here poke your finger in my lunch, don't say a damn word to me, then want me to give you a deal on an umbrella in a rainstorm! I should charge you double!!! But there she is...up there in that picture...with her $9 to ruin someone else's lunch! Grrrr!

Then there's these two...from the shadow shot.

I haven't a clue who they are either. They spent the longest time in my booth looking at one of my handmade from vintage bags. They were looking at it this way and that. They even took out a camera and proceeded to take photos. I decided to engage them in a conversation about the bag. I thought maybe they knew someone who had been looking for a bag like it and wanted to send them a photo to see if they wanted this one. When I asked them as much, the one in the white hoodie said no, she just wanted to make one for herself. Then they promptly skedaddled from my booth. Geeze, they could have just asked me for the pattern number! Or better yet if you want to make yourself a purse why not try the fabric store?!

So, those are the highlights and the low-lights from the April Allegan show. I can't wait to see what May brings!!

SHADOW SHOT SUNDAY evil plan is coming to fruition. Mysteriously, our own Ms. Harriet's computer is on the fritz. How convenient. You see, I've been trying to catch the shadowy Harriet in the race for most Shadow Shots posted on a Sunday. But seeing how she got a one week jump on me it has been a rather impossible task. And yet now it would seem that fate is smiling on me (insert evil smile here). I'm gaining ground!

Okay! I'm just really tired and late for both SSS and bedtime. Forgive me. As I know a number of others have, I've been shooting shadow every Sunday with Hey Harriet for coming on near a year now! I jumped in with her on her second Sunday on June 1, 2008. Where has the time gone! I think I missed one Sunday in there somewhere, for some no doubt lame reason, and have been trying to catch back up to her ever since. Or so the joke goes. Looks like this week I will be one step closer. Sorry about your computer T. I hope it's right as rain real soon!

Speaking of which, it rained buckets at the antique show this weekend. That's where I snapped this weeks shadow shot.

I do have a little story about the two ladies in this shot. But I'll save that for later in the week. I'm bushed!

Hope everyone has had a wonderful weekend! Be sure to stop by Hey Harriet's for links to more shadow fun.

This may not be news to anyone but me...but I'm throwing it out there anyway.

I've been listing some vintage sewing patterns, in my little shop Lisa's RetroStyle Vintage Craft & Supply ~ Recreate, over the last couple of days. While working on the listing for this pattern...

...I noticed this little logo on the front.

I have to show my ignorance here...the first thing I thought of was "National Rifle Association". Why would a pattern company be doing their "part" to support guns?! I thought I'd better look into this one a little closer. Here's what I found...

"The National Recovery Administration (NRA) was a New Deal agency in the United States. Created under the National Industrial Recovery Act in 1933, it was one of the first major pieces of the New Deal program of President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

The NRA allowed industries to create "codes of fair competition," which were intended to reduce "destructive competition" and to help workers by setting minimum wages and maximum weekly hours. It also allowed industry heads to collectively set price floors."
~ Wikipedia

Aha...another high school history lecture missed while daydreaming out the classroom window!

Thank heavens not everyone was daydreaming.

"Between 1933 and 1936 DuBarry patterns were marked with the NRA logo to support the National Recovery Act. Because of their short production time they are harder to find and are considered highly collectible." ~ Cemetarian La Dolce Vintage

Check out these two NRA marked patterns.

Another Time Vintage Apparel

Heaven's to Betsy Vintage

Wow...check out those prices!

My pattern is missing 2 little pieces(collar and bow)so I'm sure that significantly decreases the value of my pattern. However, with what I paid for mine, I was going for a much more humble profit anyway. As always, I'm hoping that a small time collector, whose been jonesing for an NRA marked pattern, but been unable to afford one, will stumble upon mine. I get far more joy from passing on an affordable treasure, than from high profits.

I'm thinking I should make "who knew" a regular feature. Anyone out there interested in learning just how much I don't know?!

We had our little garage sale over the last 3 days and we couldn't have asked for better weather. Perfectly sunny skies and temps in the 70's. Just awesome! I had a nice time visiting with my parents (we had the sale at their house) and all the "shoppers". Everyone was just happy to be out and about on such gorgeous days.

Two "bloggy" things happened during the sale. One was that I met a new reader from a neighboring town. She had just happened upon my blog on the day I posted about the sale. It was so cool to meet her! We had so much to talk about given our common interest in old things. If you're reading this Sherry, it was a real pleasure to meet you and I certainly hope to hear from you again!

The other "bloggy" thing was I reconnected with, oddly enough, another Sheree. She and I once belonged to the same antique study group. Sheree had been reading my blog for a while and at first didn't know that it was me who was writing it. Eventually she had enough information and putting two and two together, figured it had to be me. Sheree sent me this photo today for Shadow Shot cool is that?! My first reader submitted shadow shot...

Fun shot Sheree! He/she looks so happy. Thanks for sending it over:D Hopefully you'll stop by and tell us a little something about this canine cutie! She looks like a real sweetie.

When I wasn't busy visiting, the sprawling shadows of this old oak trees branches kept catching my attention.

Ahh...sunshine makes such great shadows!

Hope everyone has a wonderful Sunday!! Monday is the start of the week long Vintage Market Team Earth Day Sale...check out the post below for more details.

The next couple weeks are going to be busy ones for little 'ol RetroStyle!

This weekend we're having a garage sale. Spring cleaning reveled some severely overflowing closets. Then all next week is the big Vintage Market Team Earth Day Salebration on Etsy (April 20th - 25th). There will be vintage goodness a plenty on sale in both my shops. The following weekend is the first Allegan Antique Market of the season. Whew! This will likely be my only post this week...till Shadow Shot Sunday...of course:) Can't miss that!

If you happen to be in Fenton, Michigan this Thursday, Friday or Saturday...drop me a line and I'll give you directions to our little Spring clean out sale.

Or stop by and see me at either of my Etsy shops next or here. Below is a fun promo made by team member Tialey Vintage that gives all the details.

If you're really up for some fun...drop in on me at the Allegan Antique Market on Sunday the 26th.

Gotta run...see ya in the shadows on Sunday!

Etsian Becky Kazana gave me a twofer yesterday!

(The morning glory glasses and the painted pin are in my vintage shop.) So bright and cheery!! Just what I needed after spending the day doing taxes:{ Even better her treasury included a link to a garden party. It's so cute and really should check it out.

Impressed by her creativity I had to have a peek at her Etsy shop. Notice her subtitle..."The secret of happiness is to be happy already." I need that tattooed on my forehead...especially at tax time! Anyway, look at the cuteness I found there...

She makes the sweetest little pipe cleaner dancers. This ones name is Cassie the dancing girl...AdorAble!!

Hope everyone has a very cheery weekend! Happy Easter:-) See you in the shadows on Sunday!

It seems like I just shot out of here last week with little warning. Time has been getting away from me these day blurring into the next. The trip kind of snuck up on me.

I'm back now. We had a great time. I hit the road with my two junking buddies (aka Mom and Sister in Law). And no, it wasn't in that 1970's VW Bug. Not enough room in that little thing to carry all our treasures...not even on the homemade roof rack. That was a photo of me circa 1979 leaving on a camping trip (my first car).

We made the 100 odd mile trip to Kalamazoo, where my niece Chelsea (my former model) is attending Western Michigan University.

Chels is taking business and fashion related classes and is a member of a group called MODA (Merchandising Opportunities and Design Association). MODA put on a fashion show last weekend to benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

It was a fantastic show! We attended as VIPs and were treated to wonderful hors d'oeuvres, lovely music and sumptuous treats.

As is that wasn't enough fun for one weekend...we hit every thrift store we could find all the way down and back! WooHoo!!

Those are just a few pictured. Mostly I was too excited to get in to see what I could find to stop for a photo. I bet we hit at least 20-30 thrift stores. We even found a garage sale.

See that aluminum glider and the rocker? Mine:) LOVE them!!! I even have a matching lounge chair that I found last summer! What are the odds of that?! I don't think I'll be letting those go anytime soon!

Back to work now. Some of the weekend finds have already been here and here. Some stored for the Allegan show. This is what's left on the kitchen counter waiting to be dealt with....

Guess I'd better get cracking...I've got lots of catching up to do!
